The Face Shop x Kakao Friends Oil Control Water Cushion Review
Since it’s always an oven here in Florida I’m constantly on the lookout for makeup that won’t melt off my face as soon as I step out the door.
Enter The Face Shop and Kakao Friends Summer Edition Oil Control Water Cushion that’s supposed to be completely waterproof AND sweat proof. The foundation is housed in a standard cushion compact, and this specific one has the character Ryan the bear on it. Open the lid and you see that you also get an adorable puff with more tiny Ryans on it 😀 Under the white divider is the sponge that’s soaked with foundation. The foundation has an oil control formula that’s meant to control oil and sebum production so it’s perfect for those with oily or combination oily skin. It also has an SPF of 50 PA +++ to protect the skin from harsh UVB and UVA rays. The cushion is available in two shades, V201 Apricot Beige and V203 Natural Beige
I did a first impression of this product on my YouTube channel (8thdaybeauty) which you can watch here as a precursor to this review. I applied the foundation over my skin that I had previously moisturized and protected with a facial sunscreen. I didn’t use a primer (or set it with a powder after) because I wanted to test how the foundation wore on its own. I got the shade V203 Natural Beige, which is the darker of the two available shades.
Application: As far as application goes, the foundation was very easy to apply. It didn’t set too quickly so I was able to take my time and blend out the foundation. However I wasn’t too pleased with the puff. I noticed that the edge of the puff left streaks on my face as I patted the foundation on, so I had switched to a beauty sponge to ensure that everything was well blended.
Shade match: This cushion is way to light for me at the moment, especially since I’m sporting my tanned summer skin AND my face always tans a lot more than the rest of my body. It would work for me during the fall or winter (it’s pretty much the same shade as my pale stomach LOL), so I’d definitely get more use out of it during the colder months.
Coverage: The foundation has a great medium but buildable coverage, and was able to conceal the redness around my nose as well as a few random red pimples on my cheeks. I was also happy to discover that a little goes a long way with this foundation and I was able to cover my entire face with just a few presses into the compact.
Finish: It has more of a powdery finish so you can definitely tell I’m wearing foundation when I use this, though doesn’t look heavy or cakey on the skin so I’m not mad at it haha. But because of its powdery finish, It would definitely accentuate dry areas around my face. So if you have dry patches it would be best to exfoliate before using this foundation. It also doesn’t oxidize, so you don’t have to worry about the colour changing throughout the day. As far as application goes, the foundation was very easy to apply. It didn’t set too quickly so I was able to take my time and blend out the foundation. However I wasn’t too pleased with the puff. I noticed that the edge of the puff left streaks on my face as I patted the foundation on, so I had switched to a beauty sponge to ensure that everything was well blended.
First Impression: I was very pleased because the foundation was very easy to work with (aside from the so-so puff), concealed all my red areas and it had a nice medium coverage with a powdery finish that made my skin look flawless AND looked excelled on camera. At this point I had very high hopes that it would last through the day and into the evening.
3 hours after application: I started to look a bit shiny because I was out and about and it was a really hot day, but overall my skin still looked really good. I was also sweating quite a bit and the foundation didn’t melt off my face so it passed the waterproof test! But to be honest I was a bit disappointed because it’s marketed as an oil control foundation and I was starting to look shiny after only 3 hours…
6 hours after application: I am significantly shinier than I was 3 hours ago. From far away my skin looks good but up close I can see that the foundation is starting to look patchy around my mouth and nose. It’s also starting to feel heavy on my skin. Not happy at this point.
9 hours after application: Things just went downhill after the 6 hour mark and by 9 hours my face looked flat out greasy and felt heavy. The foundation was also really accentuating my dry areas and fine lines. I removed my makeup after 9 hours because I didn’t want to keep wearing it.

Final thoughts: I have mixed feelings about this foundation cushion. On one hand I love how it made my skin look smooth and flawless. I started to look shiny after 3 hours but it was definitely more of a dewy glow than a shine & my skin still looked great until the 4-5 hour mark so I was happy. Everything started changing around the 6 hour mark though, and from then on my skin started to look greasy and the foundation patchy. So It’s definitely not as ‘oil-controlling’ or ‘long-wearing’ as it claims to be. I could probably make it last longer with a good primer so I’ll definitely keep using it with different products and see what happens.
In my video I gave the foundation 3.5 out of 5 stars based on my first impression of the product. After wearing it for a full 9 hours I change my rating to a 3/5 stars. Points were given for the easy application and the fact that it really made my skin look flawless for 4-5 hours so it would be a great foundation to wear for short outings. Points were deducted because the puff wasn’t good, the shade selection is extremely limited and major points were deducted because of the simple fact that for me it didn’t minimize oil control and it wasn’t long wearing.
