How to Prepare Your Skin for Makeup
I looove a good skin care routine, and a good pre-makeup skin care routine is really important in order to insure that your face is smooth for an easier makeup application, protected from the sun and also ready for a full day of makeup. It may sound daunting, ‘preparing your skin for makeup,’ but it’s really very simple and only requires a few extra steps before the actual makeup application 😀
Let’s jump right into it!
Face cleansing & exfoliating:
So the first thing I do, is I cleanse my face with a facial cleanser. While the cleanser is still on my face I take an exfoliating pad and gently rub it around my face. Exfoliating is a really important skin prep step because you need to remove all of the dry dead skin cells around your face to ensure that your makeup blends easily and sits nicely. If you don’t exfoliate your makeup can end up looking cakey and flakey. If you don’t have an exfoliating pad, you can also use a small face towel and just rub it in small, gentle circular motions around your face, focusing on the areas where your skin looks rough or flakey. Or you can even use an exfoliating face wash. I like the Clinique exfoliating scrub or the freeman charcoal and black sugar polishing mask. I usually exfoliate two or three times a week and for about, I’d say a minute. Then I wash my face and pat it dry.
Next, I use a moisturizing mask because I want to incorporate some moisture back into my face. And also because I love using masks and I use them whenever I can :P. I spread it all over my face, let it sit for 5 minutes and then I wash my face and pat it dry with a towel. If I have a lot of time, I’ll use a sheet face mask for this step.
Dry Area Treatment:
Next I take a thicker cream, and I apply that around my nose because sometimes the area around my nose needs extra attention. If your makeup tends to crease and flake around your nose or mouth or forehead even if you exfoliate then it might be because your skin is really dry there. In that case, use a thicker moisturizing crème around that area before you go in with your regular moisturizer to really give that area the additional moisture it needs.
Next is sun screen and I always use sunscreen under my makeup because I always want to protect my skin from UVB and UVA rays. Using sunscreen on a daily basis will decrease your chances of sun spots, wrinkles and any signs of premature aging. Your future self will thank you for it 😀 :P. I spread a pea sized amount all over my face and make sure to really rub it in well.
All Over Moisturizer
After sunscreen I go in with my favourite moisturizer and rub it all over my face to moisturize everything.
Last step is primer and I smooth that over the areas of my skin where my makeup is most likely to wear off during the day, like around my nose, cheeks, chin and forehead. And then after this my skin is ready for makeup!
